Pelvic Bowl Yoga has always been a conscious embodiment practice for me. I loved how it awakened my creative expression and, the affect it had on my painting. And even though I was enjoying painting before I started my deep dive into addressing my aging pelvic bowl, all the old conditioning of living in a culture that does not eagerly support expressing my feminine intelligence and sensual aliveness was present as well.
This painting came in March of 2012, during a time when I was diving more deeply into the seeming dichotomy between the spiritual wisdom of my long term yogic life style and my deep sensual and creative leanings. I was still in the early phase of shifting my way of working with women in my Yoga Nidra practice. I had developed The Brain- Body-Pelvic Bowl Connection and was working with clients moving into peri-menopause and menopause. I was helping them mitigate many of the common side effects that were interfering with them feeling vibrant, alive and juicy. Many were suffering from adrenal exhaustion.
Using the Brain-Body-Pelvic Bowl Connection as a conscious embodiment practice we were having great success healing long held body armoring and trauma from childhood or early romantic involvements, elevating their libido’s and an overall sense of physical and emotional vitality.
In short, my clients were much happier and more engaged in their lives. Even with all this success, and the gratitude of my clients and their intimate partners, I was still feeling discomfort arising in myself each time I began directing my clients to dive more deeply into their unique feminine anatomy.
I received my yoga training in an Ashram with a very long and refined relationship with Bramacharya as abstinence from sensual influence and sexual pleasure. I never bought into that part of my training, and always felt like I lived on the outskirts of town, so to speak. Now, altering the sacred practice of Yoga Nidra to help woman reclaim their creative expression, physical and emotional vitality, and sensual presence, I was deliberately moving into an area that was classically off limits. I was also aware that I was consciously placing myself in a position where unpleasant criticism might flow my way.
Then one day I was listening to my meditation teacher while doing my somatic practice when a flash, like lightening, came into my minds eye. It felt like the energy of my spirit, animated by my yogic wisdom, and my sensual leanings, cultivated by actively living through my senses, combining in a potent sense of new understanding. It felt like a new structure and commitment of collaboration by these two aspects of myself were settling into a place of refuge together.
I don’t think there is any surprise that the colors of this painting are what they are, or that it resembles the opening of a Yoni, with the purple labia’s on either side.
When you look at the painting, how or where in your body do you feel your experience of it?
How do your sensual leanings and your wisdom practice inform one another?
They do, and become even more profound, synergistically, when we allow them a free flow of exchange. The problem is, many spiritual practices and teachings don’t speak to the importance of engaging those practices within a body-mind system that celebrates physical sensation. More often than not, it’s something to note, label, and set aside for the more important work of being present.
Sensation is presence. In my world, it’s the best kind of presence.
I love how a sunset feels in my body.
I love how I feel when I hear rainfall, thunder or the soft curl of a wave caressing the beach.
When we engage pelvic bowl yoga as a conscious embodiment practice to develop right along side all of our other spiritual practices, our process of awakening becomes more enjoyable and dynamic.
